Crockpot Meatloaf

I'm not a fan of meatloaf and now I think I know why. It's usually dry and boring. This recipe has changed my mind. Nice and moist with it's own gravy. I used 1 pound lean ground beef and 1 pound spicy Italian sausage. Surprisingly it didn't fall apart. Red potatoes worked really well and I left out the onion and pepper.

  • 2 pounds lean ground round or chuck
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs or fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 envelope brown gravy mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 to 8 small potatoes, halved or quartered

In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except potatoes. Shape into a loaf. Place in Crock Pot. Place potatoes at the sides of loaf. (If potatoes are peeled, wrap in foil to keep from darkening.) Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.

Brew House Coffee

Two of my favorite things are coffee and drive-thrus especially when the weather is bad you don't want to park and get out of your car. Brew House Coffee has a drive up window and indoor and outdoor seating. They are located at 1507 East McCarty in downtown Jefferson City Missouri. Their coffee is good so I decided to try their lunch menu. It's small with sandwiches and salads. They also have scones and muffins to go with a morning coffee. I had a chicken salad on a croissant and enjoyed it very much. Large chunks of chicken with celery, tomato and lettuce. A bag of chips is included. I also tried a Chai smoothie which was really different and good. They have a small eating area but also have a nice homey space in the back for sitting and reading a book or chatting with friends. The drive up window was busy so it was a good idea.

Improvising

I couldn't decide what to have for supper while the husband was at the races so I improvised a bit.

Microwave 6 Tater Tots for a minute. Add some butter to a small frying pan. Melt butter and add 2 eggs. Add mashed up Tater Tots and 4 monterey jack cheese cubes. Cook on low til eggs are done and cheese is melted. You can add anything else you like to spice it up. Very good if I do say so!

Lambert's Cafe, Ozark Missouri

Remember when you were a kid and your parents wouldn't let you play with your food. Well there is a restaurant where they actually throw food at you. And when you catch the hot yummy rolls you will feel like a kid again. Lambert's is The Only Home of the Throwed Rolls! A fun atmosphere with rock and roll oldies playing and walls full of tin signs of Americana. The food is basically tasty!
You order from the menu and then get a taste of the pass-around side dishes that servers dish out at your table. The rolls are pretty big and you can eat as many as you can catch. Get there early and they don't take credit cards.

B. K. Bakery

It's very convenient to buy baked products at the grocery store while shopping for food. But do they really bake everything on site. B. K. Bakery in Jefferson City is a cafe and artisian bakery. I was lucky enough to log onto Facebook on Friday just in time to call in for some free cupcakes.
They gave away a dozen of the prettiest and yummiest cupcakes I've every seen. I shared with some co-workers and they agreed. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting was my favorite. Raspberry icing chocolate cake was really good. If you like coffee the mocha frosted chocolate was
wonderful. I've had lunch there and the quiche is good also. They have all the coffee drinks you could want and iced tea. Wedding cakes, cheesecakes and seasonal pies are available also. Stop by and treat yourself to some goodies.

Hot Millions

I know nothing about the food from India so when this Bistro opened in Jefferson City I was ready to give it a try. It helped that they offered a buffet for lunch. It also helped that I went with some friends who knew more about the food than me. I tried every dish they had and liked most of them. My favorite was a cabbage dish and even though I don't like peas they were good also.
It also had some cilantro in it which is one of my favorite herbs. There was a marinated chicken leg roasted in a clay oven that was very tender and spicy. The leavened bread was good for soaking the wonderful sauces that most dishes were cooked in. The garbanzo beans dish had a nice ginger flavor. There were two kinds of rice pudding that were chilled and flavorful. Hope to go back again some time and try some more dishes.

Yo Yums Frozen Yogurt

A really fun frozen yogurt place in downtown Jefferson City Missouri. Self serve with regular and two sugar free flavors. Lots of toppings to choose from. I've been there several times and tried different flavors each time. Fill up your cup with as many flavors as you want and pay by the weight. Or get a waffle cone. The red velvet cake is my favorite so far.

Jalisco Mexican Restaurant

Every town big or small all over the country has a Mexican restaurant. In California Missouri on Highway 50 Jalisco's is a new place with basic Mexican food. We've been there twice and I ordered Yolanda's which is 3 tasty chicken enchiladas with beans and rice. Just the right amount for me.
Lots of chicken with a red sauce. It's a small place and each time we were there they were busy.
Good location right through downtown California.
